Today, Imre, my girl friend from Haarlem and who I know since our student days in Amsterdam, came to see us with her two boys Vince and Sven. We try to see each other every year when we are in Holland. Her boys are the same age as Ruby and Sam and they have a nice little friendship going. Guido stayed at home with my mum. He didn’t really mind as she promised to take him to her favourite ice cream shop in Blaricum. They both love ice creams so much! 🙂
When the boys are together, I hear Sam and Ruby speaking Dutch and picking up on the slang words. At times it sounds very funny and I am really proud how they manage as in Sri Lanka they talk to each other in English. It is also difficult for me to keep up with responding back to them in Dutch. Ever since they are at school they prefer to speak in English to me but I keep trying my best so they won’t forget. Cross fingers! 😉
We made a beautiful work through the forest at the Laage Vuursche, visited a farm and had some pancakes at one of our favourite restaurants! Imre and I had time enough to catch up while the boys played some football. I love these small traditions, the typical Dutch customs and the places we go back to every year. It creates such a bond. I hope these memories will last a life time and our / their friendship! X
