Perito Moreno!

And there we are standing, in front of Perito Moreno, something we had been looking forward to see so much! We had been talking about the visit to the Glacier National Park with the boys way back in Sri Lanka when we were still in the process of giving shape and content to our trip through South America. There is so much to see and do but we knew we had to make it all the way down south and no regrets!

It was the most beautiful day! We were picked up from our hotel and driven to the National Park which took about 2 hours from El Calafate. On the way, we were told that Perito Moreno is actually one of the few glaciers still in the world that are stable. Meaning to say that because of the climate change, the glacier doesn’t melt like some others do. It is named after a famous Argentinian Explorer, called Francisco Moreno. The word Perito means “expert or specialist” and often people refer to him as Perito Moreno. It was him who discovered part of the south of Patagonia, including the glacier.

The whole morning we spent walking around the park and watching how at times ice blocks would fall off into the water. The waters are part of Lake Argentina and continue all the way even into El Calafate in front of our hotel. See other post ( Lake Argentina!).

We were all blown away by the beauty. Here in Patagonia, nature is rough. It is wild and imposing. You feel small and fragile. The winds are very strong and the landscape dry. The temperature was pleasant during the day being it summer but we would not imagine how it would be in winter!

It was a very rewarding day and once we were back in the hotel, we all went for a long siesta. Here in the south, it gets only dark by 11pm and the sunrise is at 4.30am so at least we needed a nap before heading for dinner later in the evening. It turned out later that the boys had been playing cards all this time. Something I enjoy so much. The three of them getting along so well. I must say, I feel so proud! X
